Enough
Or why my 2026 motto is all about intention and alignment
(You know what I will never get enough of? This freaking show. Gah!! image courtesy of @missmoodyreader)
Greetings fellow earthlings. Are we ready to be beamed up yet? If, like me, this year has already felt like an onslaught of bad news and trauma from the wider world, let’s sit down here together for a bit with a virtual cup of tea and commiserate. It’s been freezing in my part of the world for decades now, or so it feels, and between the Epstein files, ICE, ongoing fascist BS, and the death of America’s treasure Catherine O’Hara, I already feel like 2026 is on my shit list. Maybe she didn’t get the memo? About 2025? And needing to do better??
Speaking of 2026, I wanted to briefly share my motto for this year (an annual tradition that I have with a friend group): this year its “Enough.” Which is all about interrogating what is enough in my life - what’s enough money? Enough time? Enough success? Enough rest? But also where in my life do I feel that I’ve had enough? Where do I need to be more in alignment? Where do I need to say the hard thing, or distance myself, or say, fuck it, enough?
Maybe you want to join me? What have you had enough of? Where do you want to be more intentional?
What I’ve been recently reading
Carrie by Stephen King - A classic for a reason, and something I read for inspiration on a current work-in-progress (I’m not ready to talk about it yet, but I’m EXCITED)
Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk - One of the few times I’ve read the book after the movie and felt it was an extremely close adaptation. This book is so good, and so ahead of it’s time. And is yet another inspiration read for a WIP.
Bunny by Mona Awad - 100% weird and unhinged in the best possible way and I freaking loooooved it.
The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow - a bisexual female knight, a time loop, and an underlying message about the importance of storytelling in fighting fascism? Sign me up.
Wreck by Catherine Newman - Middle-aged woman (hilariously) grapples with mortality as she cares for her father and adult kids. Perfect. No notes.
The God of the Woods by Liz Moore - a 1970’s teen girl goes missing from the summer camp her wealthy family owns, and the ensuing search uncovers family secrets. ALSO slightly related to yet another WIP, and I’m very much enjoying this read.
Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid - I mean, obviously. Do I need to even tell you anything about this one? No, I don’t. But thank you Mayor Mamdani for encouraging all New Yorkers to read it via NYPL!
What’s currently bringing me joy
Bad Bunny’s halftime show, which should just be injected into my veins. My god we needed that dose of hope.
Heated Rivalry. The book and the show. Yes I realize I am not the least bit special in appreciating this, but holy hell! That show is NOT safe for airplane viewing, and also SO GOOD that how can you not want to watch it on the airplane, or on your subway commute to work, or while brushing your teeth, or basically 24/7/365. It is SO rewatchable and is saving me right now. Also, episode 5 made be BAWL. All in all my feeling is that a) queer love stories are 1000% the antidote to the dark times we are in, and b) this show is proof of how much we need those queer love stories, and how impactful they can be.
Donating money to Minneapolis, and getting my kids to participate by picking which organization they want money donated to.
Okay, that’s all for now folks! Obligatory friendly reminder to consider purchasing Hear Her Howl or requesting it at your library! And if you’d be willing to leave a review on Amazon or Barnes & Noble to help others find it, I’d be forever grateful!
